Best Humane Mouse Traps [2021’s Top 7]

best humane mouse trap

Catching mice can be a distressing experience, which is why more and more people are looking for humane traps. Poison and glue traps can cause a mouse a long and painful death, so humane methods of catching them are much more popular.

Humane mouse traps

Humane traps are often called no-kill traps. Having to remove a dead mouse from a trap can be upsetting and unhygienic, so no-kill traps are a good way to simply move the mouse away from your home.

No-kill traps catch the mice securely and keep them alive. You can then release them back in to the wild so they can life happily away from your property. It’s worth noting that if you do this, you must take them at least two miles or they may well find their way back from where they came from.

Always leave them at a place where they can find food and shelter too. A change of habitat can be dangerous for a mouse if they can’t easily find what they need.

There are also some advantages to humane traps:

  • They are easier to set up, with no risk of fingers being trapped.
  • Food is kept away from other animals.
  • They are safe around children.
  • They can be used inside the house or in the garden.
  • They can be cleaned and re-used.
  • Humane traps can safely catch more than one mouse at a time.
  • No dead bodies to dispose of.

Which bait to use

Deciding which bait to use is a little different from using a snap trap. When you use humane traps the bait is inside and the mouse often cannot see it. For this reason you need to use something with a nice smell to encourage the mice to go inside.

  • Peanut butter: mice love it and the smell will encourage them to go in to the trap to get to it.
  • Strong cheese: if you plan to use cheese, make sure it gives off a strong smell so the mice can pick it up.

Setting up a humane trap

Setting up a trap couldn’t be easier.

Humane traps will have a lid or sliding bait tray where you place the bait.

Then all you do is close the lid, and it’s ready. Some traps use a trap door, and on these you simply click the door down and it will release when the mouse trips the trigger.

Traps should always be placed against the wall, with the opening closest to it. When the mouse goes inside to get the bait, the door will close behind it and it won’t be able to get out. Air will still circulate so the mouse won’t die, but it may get a little stressed, so check these traps often. If you leave them overnight you may find the mouse hasn’t survived.

Larger humane traps can also be used for rats, voles and other rodents but make sure you put the right size trap for the animal you want to catch. If you use a rat trap for a mouse, the mouse can simply escape through the holes.

What else can you trap?

Humane traps can also help you to safely trap other rodents. Smaller humane traps can catch voles and shrews, while other designs can catch moles and even an escaped pet hamster. Larger traps can catch rats and chipmunks too.
